Netflix’s global phenomenon returns for its final round with a six-episode third season, but creator Hwang Dong-hyuk still has questions to answer.
The South Korean drama is back, and its creator has learned from the past. He introduced machine guns to “Survivor”-style competition shows and increased the pool of contestants, making it easier for characters to die in gruesome ways while minimizing their impact.
This season’s hero, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), is No. 456, a commoner among the many contestants. The show’s popularity was boosted by pandemic-induced nihilism, but will its themes remain relevant now that restrictions have eased?
As the series concludes its final round, it remains to be seen whether “Squid Game” has truly given up all its final answers.
