For some Social Security recipients, April showers bring May surprises – and possibly even a third check. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program issues two checks in certain months due to quirks in the Social Security Administration’s calendar.
About 7.4 million Americans receive monthly SSI benefit payments, with about one-third also receiving a Social Security benefit. In May, some recipients will get three payments: their traditional Social Security payment on a Wednesday, and an additional two checks for June and July. Those born between January 1 and October 10 fall on the second Wednesday of the month (May 14), while those born between November 11 and December 20 receive their payment on the third Wednesday (May 21).
SSI recipients who began receiving benefits before May 1997 will get paid on the first day of the month, but with the SSI benefit coming on the first day as well. The SSA calendar shows two payments in May – one on May 1 for June’s SSI payment and another on May 30.
This quirk repeats itself in August, with payments issued on Aug. 1 (August) and Aug. 29 (September), but no payment in September. Similarly, October recipients will get two payments, but not in November.
