Staffer Behind DOGE Data Breach Gets More Access

A staffer who resigned over racist tweets and broke data-sharing rules has been rehired to work with sensitive data at several federal agencies, including the Department of Labor, Department of Health and Human Services, and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The staffer, Marko Elez, had previously shared Treasury data without permission and was given more access just weeks after his resignation. An audit found that Elez had improperly sent personally identifiable information to two officials. Despite this, Elez now has read-only access to Labor Department databases and has been granted permission to work with sensitive systems at HHS and the CFPB. The move comes as federal judges have found that DOGE’s efforts to access government data may be illegal and have broken federal law.
