NASA historian Bruce McCandless III has teamed up with acclaimed space journalist Emily Carney to create an informal and informative new volume on the history of human spaceflight titled “Star Bound”. The comprehensive book, a 296-page encapsulation of America’s fascination with rockets, covers the nation’s evolution in space exploration from Goddard’s Rockets to Goldilocks Planets.
Growing up in close proximity to NASA operations as the son of astronaut Bruce McCandless II, who became the first person to conduct an untethered flight in space, inspired Bruce McCandless III’s interest in space history. He was influenced by Colin Burgess’ book “Soviets in Space” and felt there was a lack of medium-sized general introductions to the American Space Program.
To create a smooth synthesis of ideas, McCandless divided up the labor with Carney. The book aims to be balanced in its approach, featuring both men and women involved in the space program, as well as spectators and reporters. Carney’s affinities for 1970s Skylab and early shuttle stuff added depth to the project.
“Star Bound” will be launched on January 1, 2025, and is available to pre-order from Amazon now. The book offers a straightforward history of space exploration in America, covering key events such as the first steps on the moon, construction of the International Space Station, and planning for a trip to Mars.
With technology evolving and humanity’s understanding of the universe expanding, “Star Bound” provides a unique insight into the cultural and societal contexts of America’s most important missions. The book is packed with facts and stories for novice space fans and features lists of greatest space songs, books, movies, and more, designed to make space exploration accessible to even the casual reader.
The official detailed synopsis states that “Star Bound” is a book for anyone who wants to learn about the American space program but isn’t sure where to start. It offers an engaging approach to space history, making it perfect for readers looking to explore America’s role in space exploration.
