The 50th anniversary of the Star Wars franchise is being celebrated in style at the upcoming Los Angeles edition of Star Wars Celebration. The massive fan convention will commemorate the release of the original Star Wars movie, scheduled for this year’s event. Lucasfilm has announced that the Los Angeles Convention Center will host the 17th Star Wars Celebration.
This marks a homecoming for Star Wars, as Japan hosted the 2025 celebration, which was the fastest to sell out in the event’s history. The Tokyo event saw over 105,000 guests attend, an increase of 8% from last year’s London convention.
Fans traveled from 125 countries, with 55% coming from the Asia-Pacific region and a significant presence of fans from the US. However, some attendees felt that this year’s edition was not as expansive as previous celebrations.
Despite the mixed feelings, the event featured over 26 hours of franchise programming across three main stages, plus more than 100 hours of fan panels and podcast content on supporting stages. Major announcements were made during the event, including a surprise appearance by Ryan Gosling with director Shawn Levy to reveal the release date for their upcoming spinoff feature, Star Wars: Starfighter.
The celebration also highlighted Japan’s influence on the franchise, with various panels dedicated to George Lucas’s admiration for Japanese cinema and culture. The film’s creators acknowledged the profound impact of Japanese storytelling, history, art, and popular culture on the series.
Overall, this year’s Star Wars Celebration promises to be an exciting event that celebrates 50 years of the iconic franchise.
