A strike by Starbucks baristas is expanding to over 300 stores in 45 states, affecting around 3% of all US locations. The Service Employees International Union and Starbucks Workers United are leading the action, which aims to draw attention to alleged unfair labor practices and stalled contract negotiations. The workers, representing thousands, seek a 64% increase in minimum hourly wage and over 77% over three years.
The union demands “immediate investment” in barista wages and resolution of outstanding unfair labor practices. However, Starbucks executives claim the proposals are “not sustainable.” CEO Sara Kelly says she’s willing to continue negotiations when the union returns to the bargaining table.
Starbucks recently hired Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol as head of the coffee chain, who has pledged to negotiate with the union in good faith. The company had previously faced settlements with workers demanded by the National Labor Relations Board during his tenure at Chipotle.
