A strike by Starbucks workers has expanded to four more US cities, including New York City. Workers United, which represents over 10,000 baristas, announced the expansion on Saturday, bringing the total number of cities affected to 10. The five-day strike began on Friday and initially closed stores in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, New Jersey, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Columbus, Denver, Pittsburgh, and now New York.
The union is protesting unresolved issues over wages, staffing, and schedules, which led to the walkout. Talks between Starbucks and the union hit an impasse earlier this month, when 30 agreements were reached out of eight bargaining sessions.
Starbucks operates more than 11,000 stores in the US, employing about 200,000 workers. The strike may impact the company’s Christmas sales, with Workers United warning that it could reach “hundreds of stores” by Tuesday, Christmas Eve.
