Starbucks Introduces Simplified Dress Code

Starbucks has announced a new dress code policy for its employees, effective May 12. The change aims to create a more consistent coffeehouse experience for customers by allowing staff to wear simple colors such as solid black, khaki, or blue denim. Workers will no longer be required to wear the iconic green apron.

The announcement comes amid ongoing unionization efforts, with Starbucks Workers United representing over 525 stores across the US. The union had previously sent a letter to the company, opposing any dress code changes at union-represented stores until bargaining was completed.

Critics argue that the new policy will force baristas to purchase new clothes, exacerbating existing wage and hour issues. In response, Starbucks will provide a pair of branded T-shirts to its partners for free.

The change aligns with CEO Brian Niccol’s “Back to Starbucks” strategy, which aims to simplify menu offerings, reduce wait times, and promote a more inclusive work environment. The company’s statement suggests that the new dress code will enable staff to focus on delivering great customer experiences.

However, the union is urging CEO Niccol to engage in the bargaining process, ensuring workers’ voices are heard and their needs addressed.
