Starbucks Strike Expands to 3 More Cities Ahead of Christmas

A growing strike by Starbucks workers has expanded to three more major cities ahead of Christmas. The strike, which is in its third out of five planned days, includes Boston, Massachusetts; Dallas, Texas; and Portland, Oregon, following the shutdown of nearly 50 stores nationwide on Sunday.

The strike is a response to what Workers United, the company’s union, claims are unfair labor practices and stalled negotiations with Starbucks. The union, which has unionized over 525 locations across the US, says that the coffee giant failed to present baristas with a viable economic proposal.

“We will do whatever it takes to get the company to honor the commitment it made to us in February,” said Fatemeh Alhadjaboodi, a barista and bargaining delegate from Texas. The strike is set to continue until December 24, during what Starbucks calls its busiest days of the year.

The union says that the strike will bring attention to the struggles faced by Starbucks workers, including routine slashing of employee hours and loss of access to health care. Workers United claims that Starbucks has failed to deliver a “serious economic proposal,” leading to the announcement of the strike last Thursday.
