Starbucks Unveils AI Assistant to Simplify Baristas’ Jobs

Starbucks has unveiled a new generative AI assistant created with Microsoft Azure’s OpenAI platform at its Leadership Experience in Las Vegas. The technology, called “Green Dot Assist,” will be rolled out to 35 locations this month and is expected to launch fully across the US and Canada by fiscal 2026.

The coffee chain aims to simplify baristas’ jobs and speed up service in its cafes as part of its turnaround plans. Green Dot Assist allows baristas to access a range of answers, from recipe instructions to troubleshooting equipment issues, using a tablet behind the counter. The AI assistant can be used verbally or typed into, providing quick and accurate responses.

The technology also includes features such as automatically creating tickets for IT support and generating suggestions for substitutes when needed. Starbucks has partnered with Microsoft to ensure the accuracy of the information provided, including a grounding engine that prevents “hallucinations” – incorrect answers that could cause issues.

Other new technologies on display include the latest generation of Starbucks’ espresso machines and an intuitive point-of-sale system. Tenured baristas have been able to learn the new POS in under an hour, and the technology can offer personalized recommendations and repeat orders for loyal customers, aiming to bring back the personalized touch to its cafes.
