Thousands of Starbucks workers at over 525 stores belong to the unionized group Starbucks Workers United (SBWU). The union has voted to authorize a strike if necessary, with 98% of baristas supporting the move. This decision comes after months of negotiations between SBWU and the company.
The union claims that Starbucks has yet to provide a comprehensive economic package and is still dealing with hundreds of unresolved legal disputes over unfair labor practices. The union is seeking higher pay, increased staffing, and schedule improvements.
SBWU’s bargaining delegate Silvia Baldwin stated that it’s time to finalize a foundational framework that includes meaningful investments in baristas. The union wants to resolve the current issues and ensure fair treatment for its members.
In contrast, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol recently announced an expansion of parental leave benefits, which will provide up to 18 weeks for birth parents and 12 weeks for non-birth parents. This move is seen as a positive step by some, but others remain concerned about the company’s commitment to addressing broader economic issues affecting its workers.
The union and Starbucks have been working on a “foundational framework” since April, with their most recent meeting taking place in September. The timing of the potential strike has not yet been determined.
