Starbucks Workers Walk Out Over Restrictive Dress Code

Starbucks workers have walked out of over 100 locations in response to a new dress code that they claim is restrictive and unproductive. The change, which was rolled out on Monday, requires employees to wear a simplified palette of solid black tops along with khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms under the company’s signature-green apron.

The union representing Starbucks baristas, Workers United, has been bargaining for a contract that includes higher wages, guaranteed hours, and better staffing in stores. However, negotiations broke down in late February, leading to increased acts of civil disobedience, including walkouts and picket lines.

Workers are frustrated with the new dress code, which they say is unfair and punitive. They claim that managers are enforcing the dress code strictly, with employees being sent home for small details like the color of their blue jeans or the number of visible piercings.

The union alleges that Starbucks’ new CEO Brian Niccol’s “back to basics” plan is a distraction from addressing staffing issues and improving wages. Workers say they need more support and resources to manage their workload, rather than being asked to purchase new clothing.

“We’re not just fighting for our rights as workers,” says Jasmine Leli, a union bargaining delegate. “We’re fighting for the kind of work environment that allows us to do our jobs with dignity and respect.”

The dispute highlights the ongoing struggle between Workers United and Starbucks over wages, working conditions, and job security. With more than 1,200 baristas involved in the walkouts, the issue is expected to have a significant impact on the company’s operations.
