This January, skywatchers can witness a stunning display featuring the Quadrantid meteor shower and a rare alignment of four bright planets visible in the same view. Mars will be at opposition, shining brightly all night, while Venus and Saturn will make their closest approach on the 17th and 18th.
The Quadrantid meteors peak on January 3rd, delivering 20-30 meteors per hour under clear skies. This year’s peak is a better bet for meteor watching due to the Moon’s position. Mars will occult the Moon on January 13, visible in the eastern sky.
In mid-January, Venus and Saturn will appear just a couple of finger widths apart in the sky, making for a striking conjunction. All month, four bright planets – Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Mars – can be seen in the early evening hours, although Uranus and Neptune require a telescope to spot.
Mars is at its brightest in two years and will remain visible all night as it reaches opposition. The full Moon will pass in front of Mars on January 13, making for a spectacular sight in the eastern sky.
