Stargazing Highlights: Lyrid Meteor Shower & Celestial Events

A celestial showcase awaits stargazers in North America this week. A full pink moon is waning, causing the satellite to rise later each night. Sky-watchers will witness a meteor shower and four planets aligning in the sky.

On Thursday, April 17, the Lyrid Meteor Shower begins, offering a glimpse of shooting stars. Although the peak night won’t occur until next week, observers can still spot one or two Lyrids on Wednesday, April 16, under ideal viewing conditions.

Meanwhile, Venus and Saturn will make their debut in the pre-dawn sky on Saturday, April 19, with Mercury joining them shortly after sunrise. For a precise observer, this is an excellent opportunity to see these planets in action.

Another celestial event, the Eta Aquariid Meteor Shower, starts on Sunday, April 20, and continues through May 21. This annual shower produces more shooting stars per hour than the Lyrids and will peak on Sunday, May 4.

The constellation of Boötes is also visible this week. Use the Big Dipper’s handle to locate Arcturus, a bright star that marks the beginning of the constellation. Look for the surrounding stars to form a cocktail glass shape around Arcturus.

Remember to consult online planetariums for location-specific information and dress warmly for clear stargazing conditions.
