A San Francisco startup, Point One, claims it can track objects with centimeter accuracy, revolutionizing the way companies manage logistics, autonomous vehicles, and drones. With $35 million in Series C funding from Khosla Ventures, the company aims to densify its network of base stations and expand its coverage across North America, Europe, and Asia.
The key to Point One’s success lies in its Polaris real-time kinematic (RTK) network, which enhances satellite navigation data with correction data from ground stations. This allows for accurate location tracking even on open-sky applications, achieving 1-3 cm accuracy. The company’s base stations are located within 40 kilometers of vehicles and can maintain coverage in urban areas.
Point One’s software is used by major automakers, delivery fleets, robotics companies, and wearables manufacturers. Its retrofit chipset enables centimeter-grade location for equipment that wasn’t born with this capability. Applications range from autonomous driving to farm fields, robotaxis, and drone navigation.
The market demand for precise location data is growing rapidly, driven by the increasing use of drones, autonomous vehicles, and e-commerce logistics. Point One’s focus on density, sensor-fusion stack quality, and API efficiency sets it apart in a crowded competitive landscape.
With the new funding round, Point One plans to expand its network, enhance developer tooling, and support retrofittable hardware. The company aims to position itself as the utility supplier for accurate location services, which may become just as essential to mobility as maps and connectivity already are.
