Jason Statham’s new thriller “A Working Man” has taken the top spot at the box office, beating out Disney’s live-action remake “Snow White”. Despite a mixed reception from critics and audiences, “A Working Man” performed better than expected, earning $15.2 million in its debut weekend.
Stallone co-wrote the film, which follows Statham as a construction worker with an elite military past. The movie’s success is a rare example of bankability for the industry today.
The surprise win comes after “Snow White”, which had been predicted to remain at the top, but instead plummeted 66% in its second weekend. The film has received negative buzz and backlash, resulting in a two-week global haul of just $143.1 million.
Next weekend, Warner Bros.’s “Minecraft Movie” is expected to take over as the new number one film, targeting family audiences. A trio of newcomers also opened over the weekend, including “Death of a Unicorn”, “The Woman in the Yard”, and “Chosen: The Last Supper”.
Overall, box office numbers are down 11% from last year’s first quarter, and nearly 40% from 2019. Hollywood is hoping that “Minecraft” can bring some momentum back to the industry.
