Researchers from Oregon Health & Science University found a strong link between getting enough sleep and living longer than diet and exercise. A study analyzing survey data from across the US showed that insufficient sleep, defined as less than seven hours per night, is associated with lower life expectancy. The study controlled for other factors like physical inactivity, employment status, and educational level, but only smoking had a stronger correlation.
The researchers suggest that getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night can have a significant impact on long-term health. Missing even one night of sleep can affect brain circuitry and the immune system. The study highlights obesity and diabetes as conditions linked to poor sleep that could reduce life expectancy.
Despite being an observational study, the results emphasize the importance of prioritizing sleep. Experts recommend getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night, and suggest making changes to daily routines, such as quitting bedtime scrolling or practicing yoga, to improve sleep quality.
