Steam Deck Gets Major Updates with SteamOS 3.7.0 Preview

Valve has released a major update for the Steam Deck, dubbed “Pi Day,” which brings significant improvements and new features to the handheld gaming console. The update is available as a preview and includes several key upgrades, including an upgraded Linux Kernel 6.11, KDE Plasma 6.2.5, and Mesa Graphics Driver.

The updated Arc Linux base provides better access to software and security updates, while the improved Linux kernel enhances performance, security, and hardware compatibility. The upgrade to Plasma 6.2.5 allows for a feature-rich desktop interface, enabling users to switch between a handheld and desktop-like experience on the console.

In addition to these major upgrades, the SteamOS 3.7.0 Preview also includes various minor updates and fixes, such as improved surround sound support, quicker transitions between game modes, and bug fixes like freezes in desktop mode. The update also enhances compatibility with certain displays and activates AMD P-State CPU frequency control for better efficiency.

While this is a major step forward for the Steam Deck, Valve has yet to officially release the operating system for desktop PCs. However, rumors suggest that an intuitive interface for gamers is in development. Users can currently test the preview updates by visiting Settings > System > System Update Channel.
