Google has announced that the Steam for Chromebook Beta will stop working on January 1st, 2026. The program was launched in 2022 as part of a gaming push for ChromeOS, providing a way to play games on Chromebooks through Steam. Initially available with lower hardware requirements, it later became clear that the effort was never stable.
Currently, there are 99 compatible titles in the list maintained by Google. When support ends, existing installed games will be removed. However, Google hints at a future for Chromebook gaming, citing the eventual migration of ChromeOS to Android and the continued availability of local games from the Play Store and streaming services.
