Windows 11 reached an all-time high of 54.96% among all Windows users in December 2024, according to Valve’s latest Steam Hardware and Software Survey results. This represents a significant increase from last month, with the share rising by 1.98 points.
On the other hand, Windows 10 dropped to 42.39%, while 64-bit Windows 7 is expected to drop out soon as it can no longer run the latest version of Steam due to its aging hardware capabilities.
Despite being the dominant OS on Steam, Windows 11 still has some rough edges gaming-wise. Microsoft recently paused the rollout of its latest update, version 24H2, to those using the Auto HDR feature, and some games are not functioning properly on this version.
The survey also revealed that 96.10% of participants use Windows to access Steam, with Linux coming in second at 2.29%, followed by macOS at 1.61%. In terms of hardware preferences, users tend to favor 16GB of RAM (45.07%), six-core processors (31.67%), Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics cards (5.88%), and 1080p monitors (56.12%).
Notably, Nvidia dominates the GPU market with a significant 75.67% market share, while Intel holds a slight edge over AMD in the processor segment with 63.32% compared to 36.68%.
