Shedeur Sanders, a consensus No. 2 quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft class, is gaining attention from the Pittsburgh Steelers. In a conference call on Wednesday, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. stated that it’s “a possibility” for the Steelers to select Sanders with their No. 21 overall pick.
Kiper highlighted a history of highly regarded quarterbacks dropping in the draft, including Aaron Rodgers and Brett Favre. He believes Sanders has the potential to be one of them, citing his accurate passing and decision-making skills. Despite concerns about his arm strength and speed, Kiper sees Sanders as the most accurate passer in the draft.
The Steelers are bringing Sanders in for a top-30 draft visit, which suggests their interest in improving their quarterback position. However, ESPN’s Matt Miller is skeptical that the Steelers will select Sanders, citing his struggles with sacks and need to improve his decision-making.
Sanders’ stats from last season at Colorado include 74% completion rate, 37 touchdown passes, and 10 interceptions. The Steelers have also scouted other top quarterbacks in the draft class, including Jaxson Dart and Tyler Shough.
Kiper believes the Steelers may address the defensive line in the first round, giving Derrick Harmon a higher priority over Sanders. However, if the team decides to select a quarterback, Sanders’ accuracy and anticipation would make him an attractive option.
The Steelers are still awaiting a decision from 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers on their contract offer, which has been pending for several months. With Sanders gaining attention as a potential first-round pick, the Steelers may be forced to consider him if other quarterbacks fall out of the draft.
