Steelers’ Teryl Austin Eyes Bright Future Despite Absence of Aaron Rodgers

Steelers defensive coordinator Teryl Austin expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, despite having to face a more familiar foe in new quarterback Aaron Rodgers on the opposing side.

Austin, who has had his fair share of battles with Rodgers, described him as “a pain in the butt” – a term of respect and endearment. He praised Rodgers’ ability to quickly get rid of the ball when pressured, as well as his sharp accuracy and spin on his passes.

While Austin acknowledged that Rodgers is not the same player he faced during his time with the Detroit Lions, he believes the quarterback’s skills have only improved with age. The Steelers coach expects Rodgers to remain a formidable foe, despite being more selective in his running style.

Austin also addressed other topics, including the absence of outside linebacker T.J. Watt, who is seeking a contract extension. Austin assured that Watt will return soon and emphasized the opportunity for young players to get more reps with him out.

The coach also discussed anticipated defensive changes, citing the need to improve against the run after a struggling season last year. He highlighted the importance of drafting bigger and younger players up front and making schematic adjustments to address their weaknesses.

Finally, Austin expressed confidence in second-year inside linebacker Payton Wilson’s potential to become a three-down linebacker this season, praising his work ethic and drive to improve.
