Stellantis Ditches In-Car Software Partnership with Amazon

Stellantis has abandoned a partnership with Amazon that aimed to create in-car software and generate $22.5 billion annually from 2024. The project never materialized, and Amazon staff working on the initiative have been reassigned or left the company. Stellantis has confirmed the withdrawal, stating it will pivot to an Android-based system instead.

Despite abandoning the partnership, Stellantis will continue to use Amazon Web Services as its preferred cloud provider for vehicle platforms and maintain Alexa availability in its vehicles. The automaker’s ambitious plan to have 34 million connected cars on the road by 2030 remains intact.

Stellantis initially partnered with BMW, Foxconn, Waymo, and Amazon to achieve this goal. The plan involved three main components: an underlying electrical and software architecture system called STLA Brain, a “STLA SmartCockpit” platform for delivering applications to drivers, and an automated driving platform called AutoDrive developed with BMW.

However, Stellantis has decided to stick with its smart cockpit platform rather than Amazon’s assistance. The automaker will now integrate Google’s Android-based system into this future software platform.
