Stellantis to Reopen Belvidere Assembly Plant in 2027

Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler and Jeep brands, is planning to reopen its assembly plant in Belvidere, Illinois, according to an email sent to employees by Antonio Filosa, North American chief operating officer. The plan aims to bring back over 1,500 UAW (United Auto Workers) employees.

The new mid-size pickup truck production will be a key part of the reopening, with company leaders expecting the plant to reopen by 2027, as outlined in the 2023 collective bargaining agreement between Stellantis and the UAW. The Belvidere plant was indefinitely closed in February 2023.

In addition to the Belvidere plant, other plans include:

* Building the next generation Dodge Durango at the Detroit Assembly Complex
* Investing in the Toledo plant for Jeep product production
* Investigating expansion of facilities in Kokomo where GMET4 EVO engines are manufactured

The plan was announced after a meeting between Stellantis Chairman John Elkann and former President Trump prior to his inauguration. The company has shared its plans with the UAW union, indicating a collaborative approach to the reopening.
