Stem Cell Therapy Helps Type 1 Diabetes Patients Regulate Insulin Production

A groundbreaking study has shown that an investigational stem cell therapy can enable individuals with type 1 diabetes to produce their own insulin and maintain healthy blood glucose levels for at least a year. Twelve participants, who received the therapy, experienced no severe low-blood sugar episodes after three months and 10 no longer needed to inject insulin by the end of 12 months.

The treatment, called zimislecel (previously known as VX-880), uses lab-grown stem cells intended to differentiate into insulin-producing cells. This innovative approach aims to replace impaired natural islet cells, a hallmark of type 1 diabetes. The study’s results are a significant update on previous research and provide hope for individuals living with this chronic condition.
