ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith has retracted his earlier statement that Bronny James, the son of Lakers superstar LeBron James, doesn’t belong in the NBA as a rookie. After Bronny’s impressive 17-point performance against the Milwaukee Bucks, Smith admitted he might have been wrong about his initial assessment.
Smith had previously expressed concerns that Bronny would be better off starting in the G League to hone his skills before joining the NBA. However, after witnessing Bronny’s exceptional play, including ball-handling skills and finishing at the basket, Smith believes his son has the potential to make a significant impact in the league sooner than expected.
In an interview on “First Take,” Smith acknowledged that one game does not determine someone’s readiness for the NBA, but he emphasized that Bronny’s performance suggests he is on the right track. The ESPN personality promised to maintain his coverage of the Lakers and Bronny James, acknowledging both good and bad performances.
The turnaround in Smith’s opinion comes after a heated exchange with LeBron James over comments about Bronny. Although Smith maintains he never disrespected his son, the confrontation apparently led him to reevaluate his stance on Bronny’s NBA readiness.
