Sterling Sharpe has finally achieved the recognition he deserved after being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 31 years after his playing career ended due to a neck injury. The 60-year-old receiver was honored alongside fellow classmate Shannon, who is also his brother.
Sharpe’s illustrious career was marked by impressive statistics: 595 catches, 8,312 yards, and 65 touchdowns. He holds the record for most receptions in a single season with 115, leading the NFL in 1992. Sharpe’s short career was cut short when he underwent fusion surgery on his neck vertebrae.
Sharpe’s journey to the Hall of Fame was also one of love and family. His brother Shannon has been his rock throughout his career, often sitting beside him at games and events. The brothers made history Saturday by becoming the first siblings to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame together.
In his heartfelt induction speech, Sharpe credited his love for his family as the reason behind his passion for football. He quoted his brother Shannon’s words from 2011: “I’m in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and I’m the only Hall of Famer who can say this: I’m the second-best player in my own family.”
The brothers also shared a momentous occasion when Sharpe presented Shannon with his first Super Bowl ring. The gesture was met with applause from the audience as Sharpe said, “I wear this ring because of love.”
