Classical music will make history as a piece of Johann Strauss’ “The Blue Danube” is broadcast into deep space, 200 years after the composer’s birth and 50 years since the European Space Agency (ESA) was founded. The waltz, famous for its appearance in Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey”, will be played from Vienna Symphony Orchestra on May 31, and livestreamed in several cities. To avoid technical issues, a pre-recorded version will be used, while the live performance provides the accompaniment. The music will pass by Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune before reaching NASA’s Voyager 1, over 15 billion miles from Earth, within 23 hours.
