Struggling Middle Class Strains Under Rising Prices

For many Americans, making ends meet has become a daily struggle. Years of inflation have pushed prices higher, leaving only the wealthiest consumers relatively unscathed. Low- and middle-income families, like Naomi Burns and her family of six, are feeling the pinch.

Burns’ annual salary as a traffic-control flagger is $65,000, but she needs at least $1,000 per week to cover basic expenses like groceries and bills. The family does not qualify for public assistance, leaving them to rely on side hustles like social media work and DoorDash delivery to get by.

“I bring home about $680 a week from my husband’s job,” Burns said. “But we need at least $1,000 per week just to survive.” Her own income from social media and food delivery helps make it possible for the family to stay afloat.
