A global contest to name a space rock orbiting Earth has concluded, with a student and teacher from Oʻahu’s Castle High School playing a key role in the deliberation process. Special education teacher Maya Sullivan and 11th grader Haliʻa Tom-Jardine were selected to join a star-studded panel alongside Bill Nye the Science Guy and actor Penn Badgley.
The duo discussed their experience and the factors that go into naming a space rock, which ultimately led to the selection of the name “Cardea”. The Conversation spoke with Sullivan and Tom-Jardine about this unique opportunity.
