Studio Ghibli Denies Fake Cease-and-Desist Letter Over AI-Generated Images

Anime studio Studio Ghibli has denied issuing a cease-and-desist letter claiming it was taking legal action against an app that generates images in a Ghibli-style using artificial intelligence. The controversy began when users started sharing AI-generated images mimicking the iconic hand-drawn look of Ghibli’s animated films after OpenAI’s announcement of new image-generation capabilities on its ChatGPT platform.

A user recently released an app converting photographs into Ghibli-style illustrations, prompting a claim that Studio Ghibli was issuing a formal warning letter. However, when contacted by NHK, the studio confirmed that the document was fabricated and had not issued any such letter. The authenticity of the circulating document led to several media outlets publishing stories claiming Studio Ghibli’s involvement.

Studio Ghibli has declined further comment on whether it will take action against AI-generated content using its visual style.
