A groundbreaking study is tracking the health effects on six crews of wildland firefighters over a multi-year period. The National Institute for Occupation Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service and National Park Service to monitor the well-being of these individuals.
Field researchers from NIOSH spent time with the Sawtooth Interagency Hotshot Crew in Idaho, examining how wildfire work affects their hearts, lungs, kidneys, and hearing. The study’s findings will be shared on the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center website as they become available.
