Stunning New Comet SWAN Makes Dazzling Debut in UK Skies

A newly discovered comet, designated Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN), has made a striking debut in the early morning skies over the UK. Captured by astrophotographer Josh Dury on April 9 at 4:50 a.m., the image shows the comet soaring over the Mendip Hills in Somerset.

Comet SWAN is part of a rare opportunity for astronomers to observe “dirty snowballs” – ancient objects from the far edges of our solar system. Each comet has unique characteristics, providing insights into the early formation of our universe.

The comet was discovered by Australian amateur astronomer Michael Mattiazzo using imagery from the SWAN instrument aboard the SOHO spacecraft in late March. After collecting observational data, the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center confirmed the discovery, and it is now designated Comet C/2025 F2 (SWAN).

Due to its relatively short passage across the sky, the comet will be visible for only about five days, until April 14. Observers in the southern hemisphere will have a chance to see it again after May 1, when it reaches perihelion and becomes visible from there.

Josh Dury’s photograph showcases the comet’s striking appearance, making it an exciting celestial attraction for astronomers and space enthusiasts alike.
