Subaru Takes Top Spot in Consumer Reports’ Annual Reliability List

Subaru has dethroned Toyota as the most reliable automaker according to Consumer Reports’ annual list. For years, Toyota and Lexus had swapped places at the top of the list, but Subaru’s reliability score of 68 surpasses its Japanese rivals. The only model by Subaru that underperformed in reliability was the Solterra EV, while models like the Impreza and Forester received high scores.

Consumer Reports measures reliability scores by averaging the scores of individual models within a manufacturer’s lineup. Toyota’s drop to third place can be attributed to underperforming models such as the Tacoma, Tundra, and bZ4X SUV. However, successful models like the GR Corolla Circuit have also been praised for their performance.

Subaru’s reliability is attributed to its commonality in design components, allowing for fewer incremental changes during redesigns. This approach reduces the risk of new problems emerging.

Consumer Reports ranks manufacturers based on data from two or more models. The bottom five manufacturers were Rivian, Cadillac, GMC, Jeep, and Volkswagen. Rivian earned the lowest reliability score of 14. Consumer Reports advises waiting a couple of years before buying an all-new model, especially for newer brands like hybrids and EVs.

With Subaru in the lead, it remains to be seen if the company can maintain its top spot when Consumer Reports updates its list next year.
