Subway Birth Leaves Riders in Awe on 34th Street

A 25-year-old woman gave birth to a baby girl on a New York City subway train on Wednesday, according to MTA officials. The birth took place around 11:30 a.m. at the 34th Street-Herald Square station.

Eyewitnesses reported that the mother had dropped to the floor and cried out for help as she was in labor. Passengers rushed to assist, with some producing tools like pocket knives to cut the umbilical cord. A transit worker helped the mother, who was not a medical professional, safely deliver the baby.

The baby girl is currently doing well at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. The mother and her daughter were praised for their strength and resilience in the face of an unexpected situation. “This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other,” said NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow, adding that he hopes the baby and mother will return to the subway system soon.

The birth was captured on video by a witness, which has sparked conversation about what it means to be a true New Yorker.
