Sudan Army Closes In On Presidential Palace Amid War Efforts

The Sudanese army has regained ground in Khartoum and is expected to form a new government once the city is fully recaptured. Military sources say the formation of a new government will come after the recapture of Khartoum, with army head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announcing plans for a technocratic wartime government.

The RSF has retreated due to the army’s expanded air capabilities and ground ranks swollen by allied militias. Burhan said the new government would help complete military objectives, including freeing Sudan from rebel groups.

The conflict began in April 2023 over disputes about the integration of forces after they worked together to oust civilians. The war has created a large humanitarian crisis, displacing over 12 million people and leaving half the population facing hunger.

Burhan plans to modify the interim constitution, removing references to civilian partnership and RSF, with authority solely held by the army. He also called on the Taqadum coalition to renounce the RSF, welcoming them back if they do so.
