Sudanese army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has vowed to crush the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ruling out any reconciliation or compromise. In a video statement, Burhan reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring national unity and stability.
The army took control of a major market in Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city, which was previously used by the RSF to launch attacks during the two-year-old war. The RSF has declared victory over its own forces in some areas of Khartoum, claiming control of most parts of the capital.
The conflict between the army and the RSF has led to ethnic violence, a humanitarian crisis, and famine in several areas. The United Nations describes the situation as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.
The army seized weapons and equipment from the RSF during its advance in Omdurman, further solidifying its control over the market. The RSF still holds some territory in Omdurman but has not commented on the army’s move.
The war erupted amid a power struggle between the army and RSF ahead of a planned transition to civilian rule. It left 12 million Sudanese homeless, half of the population suffering acute hunger, and is believed to have caused around 61,000 deaths in Khartoum state alone.
