Sudan Army Sets Stage for Elections Amid Civil War

Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has unveiled a plan for a transitional government, civilian prime minister, and national dialogue with civil society, aiming to end the two-year civil war that has displaced millions and killed tens of thousands. The move comes amid ongoing clashes between the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

A key component of the plan is forming a transitional government, appointing a civilian leader, and initiating national dialogue with various groups, including the RSF. To participate in this process, the RSF is urged to lay down their arms and withdraw from strategic areas such as Khartoum, West Kordofan, and Darfur.

Despite recent gains by the army against the RSF, the latter still controls key regions, including those threatened by famine. The UN has condemned the RSF’s actions in blocking aid, which is crucial for reaching desperate populations.

The conflict began in April 2023 and has seen over 12 million people displaced or flee to neighboring countries. The Sudanese army aims to end the war through a national consensus-driven plan that the international community is urged to support.
