Sudan Civil War Escalates Amid South Sudan Threats

Sudan’s civil war has intensified, with the country facing renewed threats of conflict. The situation in South Sudan has worsened, as President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar are urged to prioritize their people’s needs over personal interests by Nicolas Haysom.

The conflict in South Sudan began in 2013, stemming from ethnic divisions that led to civil war after the country gained independence from Sudan in 2011. Meanwhile, in Sudan, the army has successfully recaptured the presidential palace in Khartoum, marking a significant victory against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The UN describes the crisis in Sudan as the world’s largest humanitarian disaster, with tens of thousands killed, millions displaced, and famine forcing families to eat grass to survive. The conflict is rooted in years of instability following Omar al-Bashir’s ousting in 2019.

A brief transition to democracy was derailed by a military coup in 2021, leading to full-scale fighting between the Sudanese army and RSF. Both sides have faced allegations of human rights abuses throughout the war. The situation remains dire, with no clear end in sight.
