Sudan Market Attack Kills 54, Wounds Hundreds

A paramilitary group known as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attacked an open market in Omdurman, Sudan’s third-largest city, killing at least 54 people and wounding over 158 others, according to health authorities. The attack is part of a series of deadly clashes in the ongoing civil war that has ravaged northeastern Africa.

The RSF, which has been fighting the military since April 2023, claimed no immediate comment on the attack. Sudan’s government condemned the assault, calling it a “cruel act” and saying many women and children were among the victims.

Medical teams at nearby hospitals reported devastating injuries, with some describing the scene as “utter carnage.” The Doctors Without Borders aid group said its teams are doing their best to provide care despite shortages of medical personnel.

Sudan’s military announced a counterattack in several areas, including Rifa’a and Al-Hilaliya. However, the conflict has claimed over 28,000 lives, forced millions to flee, and left families struggling to survive amidst famine and atrocities committed by all parties involved.

The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes, while the US has accused the RSF of committing genocide in the war.
