Sudan Rebels Kill Hundreds in White Nile Villages

Sudanese rebels have killed hundreds of people in a three-day assault on villages near the town of al-Gitaina in the southern White Nile state, according to a rights watchdog. The attacks were carried out by paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been involved in a 21-month war with the Sudanese army.

The RSF killed more than 200 people, including infants, and committed “field executions, abductions, forced disappearances, and lootings,” Emergency Lawyers reported. Some victims drowned after being shot at while trying to flee across the Nile River, which was branded a “massacre” by the group.

The situation is part of a broader conflict between Sudan’s government and RSF forces, who have been accused of abuses and war crimes. The UN Human Rights Office warned that “entrenched impunity” is prompting gross human rights violations and abuse in the country as fighting spreads to new areas.

Sudan’s army has gained ground against the RSF in recent days, including regaining control of a neighborhood in the capital city of Khartoum. However, tensions remain high, and rival factions are preparing to sign a charter to declare a parallel government in areas under RSF control.
