Sudanese Market Attack Kills 54 People, Wounds Hundreds

Sudanese opposition forces, known as Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have attacked an open market in the city of Omdurman, killing at least 54 people and wounding hundreds more. The attack also claimed the lives of two civilians in the capital city of Khartoum.

The Sudanese government has condemned the attack, describing it as a “criminal act” that violates international humanitarian law. Culture Minister Khalid al-Aleisir stated that many women and children were among those killed or wounded.

RSF has denied responsibility for the attack, but experts say the conflict in Sudan has been marked by widespread atrocities, including ethnically motivated killings and rape. The conflict began in April 2023 and has since spread across the country, resulting in over 28,000 deaths and millions displaced.

The UN and human rights groups have documented numerous cases of war crimes and crimes against humanity. An investigation into these allegations is ongoing at the international criminal court.
