Sugar Bowl Postponed Due to Deadly New Orleans Truck Attack

The College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl, originally set for Wednesday night, has been postponed until Thursday due to a deadly attack on a crowd of revelers in New Orleans. At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured when a man drove a pickup truck into the crowd on Bourbon Street around 3:15 a.m.

Governor Jeff Landry and Sugar Bowl officials have assured fans that the event will be safe, with kickoff now set for 3 p.m. CST on Thursday instead of its original time slot. The University of Notre Dame, Georgia, and the College Football Playoff Committee all submitted requests to postpone the game in light of public safety concerns.

University officials are working with law enforcement to determine the impact of the tragedy on their fans and have asked for prayers for those affected by the attack. Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman emphasized that the game is secondary to the city’s needs, stating “the culture of any program; of a nation is revealed” in times of crisis.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing, with Mayor LaToya Cantrell calling it a likely “terrorist attack.” Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick described the driver as trying to run over as many people as possible, and two police officers were injured but are stable.
