“Suits LA” Fails to Capture Magic of Original Series

NBC’s new spinoff “Suits LA” tries to capitalize on the surprise success of the Netflix series “Suits,” but unfortunately, it falls flat and lacks the charm of its predecessor. The show premieres Sunday with a generic mad hunk, Ted, played by Stephen Amell, who struggles to connect with his underlings in Los Angeles.

The series is an attempt to turn the question of why a show becomes popular into a money-making venture. However, “Suits LA” doesn’t seem to know where its dramatic texture and purpose lie within the world of entertainment law. The original “Suits” distinguished itself with quick dialogue, humor, and thrilling plotlines, but this spinoff is missing those elements.

Ted’s character lacks the brilliance and charisma of his original counterpart, and the show’s attempts at humor are forced. The supporting characters, including Erica (Lex Scott Davis) and Stuart (Josh McDermitt), are underdeveloped and lack chemistry with Ted.

The show improves slightly as it progresses, but overall, “Suits LA” feels like a seance, trying to contact the spirit of its original series without truly capturing its essence.
