The latest spinoff of the fan-favorite legal drama “Suits,” “Suits LA,” attempts to recapture the magic of its predecessor but falls short. Created by Aaron Korsh, the show follows Ted Black, a federal prosecutor played by Stephen Amell, as he navigates his way through Los Angeles after being startled awake in present-day. The series explores Ted’s past and his relationships with his colleagues at the law firm Black Lane.
However, “Suits LA” lacks the foundation and distinct characters that made the original show successful. The new cast members, including Josh McDermitt as Stuart Lane and Lex Scott Davis as Erica Rollins, struggle to make an impact. The show’s reliance on gimmicky cameos and a convoluted narrative also detract from its overall quality.
One of the main issues with “Suits LA” is its inability to create memorable characters. Unlike the original series, which excelled at developing the complex relationships between its leads, this spinoff fails to deliver. The show’s reliance on plot points from Ted’s past also makes it difficult for viewers to become invested in the present-day storylines.
The original “Suits” did struggle with redundancy and cheesy dialogue during its nine-season run, but its standout characters kept it afloat. In contrast, “Suits LA” fails to distinguish itself from other legal dramas and lacks the charm of its predecessor. The show’s attempt to recapture the magic of “Suits” without truly understanding what made it successful is doomed to fail.
“Suits LA” premieres February 23 on NBC with new episodes dropping weekly on Sundays.
