The Sundance Film Festival is set to kick off next month with an impressive lineup of films featuring Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Jennifer Lopez, and Josh O’Connor. The festival will showcase 87 feature films from 33 different countries and territories.
Colman stars in the drama “Jimpa,” directed by Sophie Hyde, playing a mother taking her non-binary teenager to visit their gay grandfather. Lopez will be present with a new version of “Kiss of the Spider-Woman,” based on the 1992 stage musical written by Terrence McNally. She has called it her most challenging role to date.
O’Connor will star in the world premiere of “Rebuilding” as a rancher coping with the loss of his farm after a wildfire. The festival also features Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays a father who believes a sinister presence is stalking his family after his wife dies.
The festival boasts an impressive lineup of documentaries, including films about the fight against book banning in Texas, anti-trans legislation in the US, and a teacher in Russia pushing back against propaganda. Other notable films include “Atropia,” “Bubble & Squeak,” and “Sorry, Baby.”
“We’re excited to share these moments of discovery together with our communities soon and thankful to our artists for entrusting us with their stories,” said festival director Eugene Hernandez. The Sundance Film Festival will take place from January 23 to February 2 next year.
New additions include a remake of Ang Lee’s “The Wedding Banquet” starring Lily Gladstone and Bowen Yang, as well as the A24 music industry thriller “Opus” starring Ayo Edebiri and John Malkovich. The festival also features a period drama “Train Dreams” and a film about a woman who swaps bodies with a chair.
Overall, the Sundance Film Festival is shaping up to be an exciting event, showcasing a diverse range of films that are sure to spark conversation and connection among audiences.
