Sunderfolk Review: A Charming Tabletop RPG Experience

Sunderfolk is a game that has snuck up on me and exceeded my expectations in terms of its innovative approach to tabletop RPG gameplay on the modern gaming landscape. Developed by Secret Door and published by Dreamhaven, the brainchild of Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime, Sunderfolk brings together the best of both worlds – the social aspect of playing with friends and the excitement of a video game.

Players control their characters through an official app on their phone or tablet, while the game is played out on the TV screen. The world of Sunderfolk is filled with fantasy creatures, including six playable characters each with unique abilities tied to three cards that represent movements and actions across grid-based terrain.

One of the standout features of Sunderfolk is its approachability and explainability, making it a great introduction to tabletop RPGs for newcomers. The game also includes a Fate Deck, which adds an element of chance to gameplay, while providing insight into the likelihood of certain outcomes.

The game’s roleplay elements are also noteworthy, allowing players to name enemies or items in the world, adding a layer of depth and immersion. While the Switch version may not look visually stunning, its portability makes it a great fit for the console.

While Sunderfolk is best enjoyed with friends, whether online or offline, I’m looking forward to furthering my adventures with this game on Switch. With its charming concept and clever adaptation of tabletop principles, Sunderfolk is an experience that will keep me hooked – especially when I can gather a group of friends to join me in the world of Arden.
