The Phoenix Suns are reportedly considering trading Kevin Durant, despite the steep price they paid to acquire him just two years ago. In 2021, the Suns traded away Mikal Bridges, Cam Johnson, Jae Crowder, and five first-round picks to bring in Durant. Now, teams like the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, and Miami Heat are interested in acquiring Durant, but they’re trying to keep their most valuable assets while offering minimal returns.
The question is, why would the Suns consider making such a deal? The answer lies in the fact that Devin Vassell from the Spurs or Jalen Green from the Rockets might be attractive options for Durant. However, these players are not the caliber of talent that the Suns traded away to get Durant in the first place.
Draft picks and unproven young players may seem appealing on paper, but they’re gambles that don’t provide the same level of production as a player like Durant. Trading him for less would be a loss for the Suns, regardless of how it’s spun.
However, there are some intriguing possibilities that could shift the balance. For example, adding Trae Young to the lineup, which already features Bradley Beal and Devin Booker, could create an electric offense. While defensive concerns might arise, if owner Mat Ishbia is committed to putting on a show, Young could be the kind of flashy player that keeps Phoenix in the headlines.
Ultimately, the real question is whether Durant still wants to win a championship or is content with playing at a high level. If he’s fine with just playing basketball, then maybe Atlanta or another non-contender makes sense. But if winning truly matters, then both Durant and the Suns need to think bigger than what’s currently being floated.
