A performer in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl halftime show was detained after waving Palestinian and Sudanese flags during the performance, leading to a lifetime ban from NFL events. The individual, who has not been identified, was part of the 400-member field cast and had hidden the flag on themselves before the show began. The protest came as President Donald Trump was in attendance, following his proposal for relocating Palestinians to neighboring Arab countries.
The performer displayed a flag with “Sudan” and “Gaza” written on it, along with a heart and solidarity fist. The act was deemed neither planned nor part of the production, according to Roc Nation, the entertainment company behind the halftime show. The NFL has referred further questions to New Orleans police, who have not formally arrested or charged the individual.
Lamar’s performance marked the first time a solo rap star had headlined a Super Bowl halftime show, and came after he earned five more Grammy Awards.
