Nintendo has added its first GameCube game to the Switch 2’s library, and it’s none other than Super Mario Strikers. The soccer franchise made its debut on the original GameCube in 2005 and is now playable for the first time on modern hardware.
While some fans might be disappointed that it’s not a more popular title like Luigi’s Mansion or Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, diehard Strikers enthusiasts will rejoice at finally having a good version to play. The GameCube original didn’t sell well but gained a loyal following due to its simple yet fun gameplay.
The new addition is also an improvement over the 2022 release Mario Strikers: Battle League, which was light on content and had more strategic gameplay that some fans found soulless. With the Switch Online app’s multiplayer options, players can now enjoy improved online multiplayer with friends.
The GameCube emulation holds up well, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, which means Super Mario Strikers should look and run better on the Switch 2. Meanwhile, a new modern GameCube controller replica released alongside the console will come in handy for other classic titles like Smash Bros. Melee, which is likely to be ported in the future.
The inclusion of Super Mario Strikers opens up possibilities for more sports spin-offs, including Mario Superstar Baseball and Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, sparking hopes that Nintendo might release a new dance pad just in time for the holidays.
